19th Century Mahogany Pillar Post Desk Box - A Victorian-style desk-top letter box crafted from mahogany in the form of a British pillar post box. 16 1/2” tall and 9” diameter.  The cylindrical body features a decorative hexagonal domed cap with carved scrolled relief work. The upper section contains a brass-mounted aperture with a hinged flap. A central curved door is mounted on a continuous brass piano hinge and is secured by a functional lock and key. The base is circular and stepped, housing a single small drawer with a brass bail handle. The brass letter flap is stamped with the word LETTERS in black serif block capitals. A small rectangular brass frame is mounted to the door, currently containing a wooden insert intended for a collection time card. The interior unpolished edge of the door bears the hand-written characters MX-4 in black ink. Faint, illegible characters are visible on the interior wood behind the letter slot.
