Bidspirit auction | A Meiji Period Satsuma Earthenware
A Meiji Period Satsuma Earthenware Tea Service - A Meiji period Japanese Satsuma tea service crafted from cream-toned earthenware with a finely crackled glaze. The service includes a lidded teapot with a saucer stand, a two-handled lidded sugar bowl, a large waste bowl with a saucer stand, several teacups, saucers, and shallow plates. The pieces feature a traditional kacho-ga (bird and flower) decorative scheme executed in polychrome enamels and heavy gilding. The teapot depicts a golden pheasant on a rocky outcrop surrounded by peonies and bamboo, while the bowls and plates feature various waterfowl, including mandarin ducks and herons, amidst aquatic reeds. Intricate borders of deep cobalt blue enamel are overlaid with gilded shippo-tsunagi (linked treasures) and floral patterns. The interiors of the teacups are further detailed with small painted floral sprays of iris and rose. No maker signatures or kiln marks are visible on the upper surfaces of the pieces, and the undersides are not shown.
