Bidspirit auction | 20th Century Burmese Embroidered Kalaga

20th Century Burmese Embroidered Kalaga Tapestry - A large traditional Burmese Kalaga tapestry, featuring dense high-relief embroidery in the shwe chi doe technique. The textile is constructed on a dark velvet or heavy cotton backing, featuring heavily padded figures that provide a three-dimensional effect. The central composition depicts a royal or celestial figure mounted on a galloping horse, surrounded by a retinue of standing and kneeling figures in traditional Southeast Asian courtly attire. The elaborate background is filled with swirling patterns of metallic cord. The embroidery is embellished with a variety of materials including metallic threads, flat sequins, and glass cabochons. The top border contains six arched niches, while the bottom border features five circular medallions, each framing a celestial dancer or Kinnara figure. The piece is finished with a wide gold-toned fabric border. No maker's marks, signatures, or inscriptions are visible on the textile. A small plastic bag containing approximately 40 to 50 loose yellow glass cabochons is included.
