19th Century Hardwood and Wrought Iron Commander - A 19th-century heavy-duty mallet, also known as a beetle or commander, crafted from solid hardwood. The tool features a massive cylindrical head reinforced with two thick wrought iron hoops secured by large iron bolts and heavy-gauge nails. The long, hand-hewn handle is fitted through a central mortise in the head. This type of implement was traditionally employed in heavy timber framing, shipbuilding, or large-scale masonry work to provide powerful impact without damaging metal tools. The wooden surfaces display a naturally weathered, gray-toned patina with evidence of heavy historical use. The iron components show deep oxidation and pitting consistent with age and exposure.
