18th Century Ash and Oak Ladderback Armchair - An 18th-century provincial ladderback armchair constructed primarily from ash and oak. This heavy armchair, often referred to as a great chair, features a four-slat ladder back design with graduated, arched cross-members. The frame is built with primitive pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery, featuring turned rear posts topped with onion-form finials and slightly bowed arms pinned to the front and rear supports. The piece is supported by a double-stretcher system on the front and sides for structural stability. The seat is a three-plank wooden construction set into the frame, showing visible iron nail heads. The wood displays a deep, naturally aged patina with heavy staining and wear from centuries of utilitarian use.
