1860 Straw Back Orkney Chair - An antique hooded armchair featuring a hand-woven straw back and a wooden box-form base. form Stronsay. This is the exact type of utility vernacular Orkney Chair that inspired David Kirkness and Liberty & Co to turn the Orkney Chair into a Arts & Crafts icon. The chair is constructed from pine or a similar softwood frame with a dark, aged finish. The distinctive high, curved back and hood are created from coiled and stitched straw or seagrass, which is lashed to two upright wooden posts with cord. The lower section consists of a solid plank box base that serves as a seat and storage compartment. The side panels and base are joined with visible iron nails and simple flush-plank construction.
