My grandmother collected all sorts of antiques, artwork and old books, and when I was young I used to spend hours copying her loose prints of details of old masters? pictures. This was one of the ones without a label. I was just drawn to what I thought was a look of deeply pensive concentration in his face. I had no idea it was the unfortunate Holofernes and part of a much larger painting by Valentin de Boulogne, depicting a macabre scene from the Book of Judith in the Old Testament. ARTIST BIO Forever inspired by the timeless, classical beauty of the Italian Renaissance, Francesca, predominantly a portrait painter, seeks to convey recognisable realism, imbued with the rarely seen iridescent flow of light linking the soul with the realms beyond.
