An 1857 Illustrated London News Wood Engraving, Acts of Bravery - A hand-coloured wood engraving from the publication THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, legibly dated at the top left JUNE 20, 1857. The print is titled ACTS OF BRAVERY DURING THE LATE WAR and features six vignettes within a decorative border of oak and laurel leaves. The individual scenes depict military personnel during the Crimean War, with captions including THOS. REEVE, JAS. GORMAN, AND MARK SCHOLEFIELD, REPELLING AN ATTACK WITH THE GUNS OF THE DISABLED BOATS AT ZABARAI; THOMAS WILKINSON, R.M.A. AT SEBASTOPOL, LEAVING THE PROTECTION OF THE BATTERY TO REPAIR DAMAGES; WILLIAM PEEL (CAPTAIN), H.M.S. DIAMOND, THROWING A LIVE SHELL OVER THE PARAPET; SERGEANT CONNOR, (23RD REGIMENT), TAKING THE COLORS FROM LIEUT. ANSTRUTHER, WHO WAS MORTALLY WOUNDED, AND CARRYING THEM TO THE END OF THE DAY AT ALMA; R. J. LINDSAY (CAPTAIN) AT THE BATTLE OF THE ALMA; and CECIL W. BUCKLEY (COMMANDER) AND HENRY COOPER (BOATSWAIN’S MATE) BURNING RUSSIAN STORES AT GENITCHI. The lower decorative scrolls bear the legends TO THE BRAVE and HONOUR. The work is housed in a glazed campaign-style frame featuring multi-toned rails and metal corner brackets with rounded nail heads. No maker's marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the frame.
