Two Carved Figures of the Laughing Buddha - This lot comprises two figures depicting the Laughing Buddha, also known as Budai. The larger figure is depicted in a seated pose with a prominent belly and broad smile, holding a string of prayer beads in the left hand. The figure is set against a carved flaming mandorla and is worked from a mottled pale green and yellow material. The base is hollowed, revealing rough hand-tooling and chisel marks consistent with manual production. The second, smaller figure is shown in a seated position holding a sack and prayer beads, finished in a polished black material. No maker's marks, signatures, or labels are visible on either item.
