Bidspirit auction | A Japanese Imari Ware Porcelain
A Japanese Imari Ware Porcelain Decorative Peacock Charger - A large Japanese porcelain decorative charger, featuring a vibrant Imari style palette of underglaze blue, iron-red enamel, and gold highlights. The central circular medallion depicts two peacocks amongst flowering branches, one with its tail feathers fully displayed against a bright blue ground. This central scene is enclosed by a border of alternating red and blue geometric panels. The outer register is divided into six radiating sections containing varied traditional motifs: two panels featuring imperial flower carts (goshoguruma) on stylized wave grounds; two panels with birds amongst blossoming branches; and two panels displaying clusters of peonies and chrysanthemums. The reverse of the plate is finished with a white glaze and features printed marks in the centre. These marks consist of three large blue characters arranged vertically reading '伊萬里' (Imari), accompanied by two smaller red characters to the right reading '美術' (Bijutsu, meaning Fine Art). Below the characters are the printed English words 'IMARI WARE' and 'JAPAN'. A continuous gold band is applied to the outer rim.
