A Pair of D R Clarke Gouache Paintings Depicting Sheffield Trams - A pair of original paintings executed in gouache or bodycolour on paper, each depicting nostalgic transport scenes set in Sheffield. The upper work illustrates an LNER steam locomotive in green livery crossing a stone-built viaduct, known as the Wicker Arch, over a street busy with yellow and cream double-decker trams and vintage motor cars. The tram in the foreground is numbered 283 with the destination CITY, and a newspaper kiosk is visible to the right marked SHEFFIELD STAR. The lower work depicts a similar yellow and cream tram, numbered 165 and destined for MEADOWHEAD VIA CITY, positioned beside a stone station entrance marked TRAM STOP, with a municipal clock tower building in the background. Both works feature an illustrative, naive style with prominent architectural and transport detail. Both paintings are signed in black to the lower right corner D R CLARKE. The works are housed in matching dark-toned wooden frames with simple moulded profiles. No maker's marks or labels are visible on the reverse of the frames. Frame Width: 30 cm.
