Peru 1768 LM Lima Mint Spanish Colonial 8 Reales Pillar Dollar - A Spanish colonial 8 reales coin, commonly referred to as a pillar dollar or columnario, which has been converted into a brooch. The obverse features a crowned Spanish coat of arms flanked by the letters J and M to the left and the numeral 8 to the right. The struck Latin legend reads: CAROLUS·III·D·G·HISPAN·ET IND·REX. The reverse depicts the crowned hemispheres of the world between two pillars entwined with scrolls, resting on stylized waves. The reverse legend reads: VTRAQUE VNVM, followed by the mint mark LM, the date 1768, and the repeated mint mark. The coin is fitted with a hinged pin and C-clasp fastener soldered across the reverse. A small metal ring is attached to the upper edge, connected to a safety chain and a safety pin. The edge of the coin displays a corded laurel leaf pattern. No hallmarks or fineness marks are visible on the coin or the jewellery fittings.
