Bartolomeo Pinelli, Etching, Rome 1816
History of Rome Etchings on woven paper by Bartolomeo Pinelli 1816. Measures Approx 17" x 22". The bottom inscription reads as follows: "Prima Battaglia al Ticino, perduta dai Romani contro li Cartaginesi nella quale Scipione di sopranome l'Affricano di soli diecisette anni salva il Padre dalle mani de'suoi nemici e lo conduce salvo ai suoi allogiamenti"(First Battle in Ticino, lost by the Romans against the Carthaginians in which Scipio, nicknamed the African, aged only ten, saves the Father from the hands of his enemies and leads him safely to his quarters). Pinelli was born and died in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome, the son of an artisan who modeled religious statues.[1] Pinelli was educated first in Bologna and then at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. He return to live in Trastevere, then a poor quarter of Rome. His initial studio was on Piazza Sciarra on the Corso. His son, Achille Pinelli, was a famous watercolorist in his own right. An extremely prolific engraver, his illustrations depicted the costumes of the Italian people, the great epic poems and numerous other subjects, including popular customs. In general, the most recurring subject is Rome, the ancient city as well as the modern one: its inhabitants and its monuments. Please see photos for condition. Obvious staining.
