Cassell, John (Pub). The Illustrated Magazine of Art, Vol. I & The Quiver, Vol. XXI. Cassell, 1853-1886. - Two volumes of 19th-century British illustrated periodicals. The first volume is The Illustrated Magazine of Art: Containing Selections from the Various Departments of Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, History, Biography, Art-Industry, Manufactures, Scientific Inventions and Discoveries, Local and Domestic Scenes, Ornamental Works, Etc. Etc. Volume I, published in London by John Cassell, La Belle Sauvage Yard, Ludgate-Hill, 1853. This quarto-sized volume is bound in half-leather with marbled boards. The second volume is The Quiver: An Illustrated Magazine for Sunday and General Reading, Vol. XXI, published by Cassell and Company, Limited, London, Paris, New York and Melbourne, 1886. It is bound in publisher's decorative brown cloth with black and gilt-stamped ornamentation and lettering. Both books contain numerous wood-engraved illustrations, featuring works after artists such as Robert Barnes and Sir Joshua Reynolds, including the plate The Infant Samuel. The text is presented in a double-column layout typical of Victorian periodicals.
