Bidspirit auction | A Trio of Graduated Staffordshire
A Trio of Graduated Staffordshire Copper Luster Earthenware Jugs - This graduated set of three earthenware jugs features a copper luster glaze, a technique popularized in Staffordshire, England, during the 19th century. The two larger pitchers are characterized by a matching decorative scheme consisting of raised beaded bands at the neck and shoulder, between which are hand-painted floral sprays in pink, green, and light blue enamels. The smallest jug in the group is distinguished by a central cobalt blue band featuring a scene of a figure in a landscape, possibly a transfer-print with hand-painted highlights, framed by floral sprays. All vessels display a bulbous form with a flared rim, a wide pouring spout, and a C-scroll handle. The copper-bronze luster is applied over the earthenware body, providing a metallic reflective surface.
