Christoph Weigel the Elder (1654–1725) – Map of the Kingdom of Portugal / Regnum Portugalliae et Algarbiae – Hand-Coloured Copperplate Engraving (c.1720)
This finely engraved map titled Regnum Portugalliae et Algarbiae presents the political geography of the Kingdom of Portugal during the early 18th century. The map outlines key provinces such as Algarve, Beira, Estremadura, and Trás-os-Montes, with principal cities including Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, and Évora. Hand-applied colour highlights each region’s borders, and the Atlantic coastline is illustrated in elegant curvework, with references to nearby islands and oceanic zones. In the upper left corner, the decorative title cartouche is adorned with classical allegorical figures and heraldic elements. This map was created by Christoph Weigel the Elder, a prolific German engraver and publisher known for his highly detailed maps and illustrated theological works. Weigel's output contributed significantly to the visual culture of the Baroque period, with his maps balancing scientific utility and decorative flourish. The work was published in Nuremberg around 1720.Artist or Maker: Christoph Weigel the ElderDimensions: 24 cm x 20 cmMedium: Hand-Coloured Copperplate EngravingDate: c.1720Condition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
