Christoph Weigel the Elder (1654–1725) – Map of Sweden and Surrounding Regions / Sueciae Regnum cum vicinis Regionibus – Hand-Coloured Copperplate Engraving (c.1720)
This finely detailed miniature map titled Sueciae Regnum cum vicinis Regionibus depicts the Kingdom of Sweden at its historical territorial height, along with neighboring regions including Norway, Denmark, Finland, Livonia, and parts of Russia. Major cities such as Stockholm, Uppsala, Gothenburg, and Turku are marked, alongside mountain ranges, coastlines, and important rivers. The Arctic Circle is indicated, and the far north is labeled Lapponia and Finmarchia. The upper left bears a crowned cartouche flanked by two lions, symbolizing Swedish sovereignty. All borders are delicately engraved and hand-coloured in contrasting tones. This map was published in Nuremberg.This map was created by Christoph Weigel the Elder, a prolific German engraver and publisher known for his highly detailed maps and illustrated theological works. Weigel's output contributed significantly to the visual culture of the Baroque period, with his maps balancing scientific utility and decorative flourish.
