Charles Blunt (1803–1878) – Scorpio – Hand-Coloured Aquatint Engraving (1842)
This striking astronomical illustration titled "Scorpio" (No. 45) was published in The Beauty of the Heavens by Charles Blunt in London in 1842. The engraving presents the zodiacal constellation of Scorpio, featuring the classical scorpion form imposed over a field of golden stars on a deep black sky. Each star is carefully hand-coloured to highlight relative brightness and positional accuracy, evoking both scientific interest and visual elegance. As with other plates in the series, the work blends celestial cartography with imaginative representation, offering an engaging introduction to the night sky for Victorian readers. Charles Blunt (1803–1878) was a British educator and scientific writer best known for his contributions to popular astronomy. His work sought to make complex astronomical concepts accessible to general audiences through both text and engaging illustrations. The work was published by Whitehead ; Co. in London in 1842.Artist or Maker: Charles BluntDimensions: 25 cm x 20 cmMedium: Hand-Coloured Aquatint EngravingDate: 1842Condition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
