William Chapman Hewitson (1806–1878) – Nymphalidae – Plate XLI – Hand-Coloured Lithograph of Exotic Butterflies (c.1850s)
This hand-coloured lithograph titled Nymphalidae – Plate XLI features four vividly illustrated butterfly species from the Nymphalidae family, all described by entomologist Edward Doubleday. The depicted species are: 1. Pallene Eupithes, 2. Eurupus Halitheres, 3. Herona Marathus, and 4. Itanus Phemius. The butterflies are shown in symmetrical arrangement against a cream background, allowing for focused observation of wing pattern and coloration. The lithograph was drawn by naturalist and illustrator William Chapman Hewitson and printed by the firm of Hullmandel ; Walton, one of the foremost names in Victorian natural history publishing. This plate formed part of a wider mid-19th-century series that advanced the scientific documentation of Lepidoptera, combining taxonomic precision with elegant design.William Chapman Hewitson (1806–1878) was a British naturalist, lepidopterist, and illustrator known for his exquisitely detailed butterfly studies.
