Ashanti? West African Bronzed Lidded Box with Animal Finial - A West African? bronzed lidded container, potentially of Ashanti? origin from Ghana. The circular vessel features a pull-off lid surmounted by a central cast figure of a standing quadruped, possibly a goat? or antelope. The exterior of the box and the outer rim of the lid are embellished with dense, repeated registers of coiled wire-work spiral motifs in relief, framed by raised, braided rope-style borders. The interior of both the base and lid displays the characteristic rough, pitted texture indicative of the lost-wax (cire perdue) casting process. The piece shows a dark golden-brown patinated finish with significant surface oxidation and accumulation of dirt within the recesses of the decoration. No maker marks or inscriptions are legible on any surface. Diameter: 6.5 cm Height: 6.5 cm.
