A Showa Period? Japanese? Black Lacquer Lidded Spherical Trinket Pot - A Japanese? lidded spherical trinket pot fashioned in a globular form. The vessel is finished in a high-gloss black lacquer ground and is decorated to the exterior with traditional maki-e style motifs. The design features golden-toned chrysanthemums? with fine, radiating petals interspersed with stylized red and gold goldfish? swimming amongst scrolling water motifs and weeds. The lid fits flush with the body and is surmounted by a small, integrated rounded finial. The pot is constructed in two sections, with the lid having a recessed interior rim to fit securely over the base. Both the interior of the bowl and the underside of the lid are finished in a plain, undecorated black lacquer. The piece exhibits a smooth, polished surface characteristic of traditional lacquerware.
