Civil War Union 111th Michigan Colored Troop Trunk
This Civil War trunk/chest is marked/stenciled on the front "JASON MORSE" over "ADJUT 111TH U.S.C.T." over "ORLEANS, MICHIGAN". The chest has been painted a Union blue on the outside and it may have a second coat of paint from the period. All of which has muted overtime - it shows age and wear. It has a key lock and steel handles mounted on each end. The underside of lid has leftover brackets and braces for tools and supplies. Size is 31.25" long x 14" wide and 11" tall. The 111th Colored Troop was mustered out of central Michigan and and later re-designated as the 111th Regiment USCT from captured 3rd Alabama Infantry made up of many Black ex-slaves that were promised their freedom if they fought for the South. The 111th USCT saw action in the south in the last 1.5 years of the war. The chest is sturdy and strong. Hinges and handles show rust. This chest was found at an estate sale in Ionia Michigan about 15 years ago.
