FIRST Edition of the first translation into Spanish of the Greek text of the Periplus of Hannón, a famous text describing Hannón's journey with a Carthaginian fleet during which part of the Atlantic coast of Africa was colonized and explored. This work by the scholar Pedro Rodriguez Campomanes is structured into three major chapters and an onomastic index, with texts in Greek and Spanish, preceded by a preliminary discourse on Carthage's navigation, commerce and expeditions and a prologue on the Periplus of Hannón and the his trip and which, in fact, is an effort to present the history of Carthage and its king in relation to the history of Spain. Pedro Rodriguez Campomanes is considered a great scholar with a deep knowledge of the Greek language, qualities that allowed him to carry out laborious criticism, using not only the original text, but also all the classical sources available at his time. This edition is illustrated with two fold-out engravings, (1) Carta hydrographica o Derrotero de la navigation de Hannon Cartagines and (2) View from the sea of the ancient city of Cartago. Very rare.
