SECOND Edition of an important, extremely rare and unique work from Portugal at the end of the 1500s. Written in the form of dialogues, it visits the history of Portugal, including its most notable figures and deeds, from kings and military heroes to explorers and events that marked the national imagination.

The work was originally published in 1594, followed by the present. Note that despite the frontispiece, at the end it is stated in the colophon: “Just printed, the second time, this Primeyra is part of the Dialogos de Varia Historia, and[m] the Ribeyra de Sernache dos Alhos in os Moinhos do acipreste, the 8th. days of April, 1599. In the Office of Antonio de Mariz, University Printer.”

It is in this work that the portraits of the Kings of Portugal appear for the first time, later repeated in works such as Anacephaleoses, Elogios dos Reis de Fr. Bernardo de Brito or Philippus Prudens de Caramuel. In total, 19 portraits were published, including the portrait of Queen Santa Isabel that would serve to accompany the text included between folios 92 and 99, a text that appears to have been suppressed by censorship, which is why almost no copy has it.

Very rare, important and valuable.
