FIRST EDITION, very rare, probably the first Constitutions of Braga printed in Portugal, as the previous ones were printed in Salamanca [see. D. Manoel].
These Constitutions are the consequence of a Synod that was celebrated on September 10, 1537, convened by Infante D. Henrique, eighth son of D. Manuel. Born in 1512, he took his first orders at just 14 years old, having been promoted to Prior Commander of Santa Cruz de Coimbra. In 1533, after the death of D. Diogo de Sousa, he was appointed Administrator of the Archbishopric of Braga, later becoming Archbishop at just 27 years old. However, it was only in August 1537 that Infante arrived in Braga, immediately convening the synod in which the constitutions that make up this volume were approved.
