Book of 2 Samuel, chapter 20, verse ten
Calculation on lines was a method of calculation used in Central Europe around the 13th to 17th centuries. Flat disks, most of them made of metal, were placed on a board or cloth divided by lines. The value of the metal discs, which became sort of a coin failure, depended on their location on the board. Beginning in the 15th century, Nuremberg, together with the Netherlands, developed into a center for the production of account tokens. Most of the tokens in Europe were minted there, and Hans Crawinkel was the leading artist who created them. Even after the transition from Roman numerals to modern literature, which made it much easier to write arithmetic, calculation tokens were minted as game money until the 19th century.
