The Exposition Coloniale Internationale was a kind of international exhibition designed to strengthen the peoples' support in the various colonial empires. The exhibitions, funded by the governments of the colonial powers, and movies, books, and advertisements, were part of a propaganda campaign aimed at convincing the citizens of the superpowers and the rest of the world of the positive contribution of colonial expansion. They are intended to encourage citizen's recruitment for service in the colonies and promote consumer products from the colonies. The exhibitions were held once every few years in one of the major cities worldwide from 1866 to 1948. The largest show was held in Paris, the French capital, in 1931. It lasted six months and was visited by millions of visitors.
The exhibitions were visited by millions of visitors and covered large areas that included large pavilions displaying the various colonies. And the visitors passed while walking from colony to colony. Alongside the exhibits of the various colonies, the exhibitions also included product stands of commercial companies from the colonies. The exhibits also included amusement parks and huge exhibits recreated through scenery famous architectural sites such as the Taj Mahal in India and Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Also on display were live and stuffed animal exhibits. Indigenous people were brought to the exhibitions as a human zoo. They were presented in traditional dress in traditional villages, danced, and performed traditional rituals that did not necessarily reflect the realities of their lives and were adapted to the stereotypes of the critics about the non-European character. All this at a time when colonialism was considered legitimate.
At the 1931 exhibition, an Eretz Israel pavilion was built as part of the British Empire exhibition. This was the first time that the Land of Israel - Palestine was represented in an international exhibition. The Eretz Israel pavilion was built in the style of Rachel's Tomb. Although the pavilion was a general pavilion of the British Mandate, it displayed exhibits that reflected almost exclusively the development of the Jewish Yishuv and the Zionist enterprise. Also, industrial plants such as the Nesher cement plant and the Rothenberg power plants, the development of Tel Aviv, and agricultural products. Also on display were the book editions of the books Stiebel, Art, and Dvir. The land development was presented through exhibits of the Mikve Israel experimental station and exhibits of the Jewish National Fund, Keren Hayesod, and PIKA.
