Mishpat Shalom by Rabbi Yaakov Emden Published in His Home, Altona 1775
"Sefer Mishpat Shalom, words of truth that I, the 'Ya'avetz,' judged and ruled in the matter of dispute between the gates of AHU (Altona, Hamburg and Wansbeck).
"
In 1770, an argument arose between the aforementioned communities regarding taxes and the like. Each community appointed an arbitrator and the two selected Rabbi Yaakov to serve as the third ruling party. Arbitration lasted five years and concluded when Rabbi Yaakov proposed the two side's arguments and his conclusion before
beis din.
This pamphlet, an only edition published by Rabbi Emden in 1775, includes a sharply worded explanation as to why the matter dragged on for so many years.
There is an owner's signature from Rabbi Nachum Duber Friedman of Sadigura, son of Rabbi Shalom Yosef, grandson of Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin, and son-in-law of Rabbi Avraham Yaakov of Sadigura, who was well-known for his voluminous library. There is also a signature from the Minchas Shai noting that he received the
sefer as a gift.
