RARE Seljuk Bronze Bird Incense Burner: Behold this remarkable Seljuk bronze bird incense burner, a testament to the artistry of 11th to 12th-century Persia. Standing at a height of 15cm with a length of 13cm, it boasts delicate openwork, designed to release sweet smoke slowly into the air. The rectangular opening on the creature's chest allows for easy filling of the hollow interior with charcoal.
Noteworthy are the intricately patterned wings adorning its teardrop-shaped body, showcasing interlaced bands, mirrored by a similar pattern on the neck. The slender, naturalistic legs provide both form and function, supported by an arc-shaped stand for stability.
Over the centuries, this incense burner has developed a rich red-brown patina, a testament to the bronze's copper content, and a visual reflection of its storied history.
Provenance :
David Aaron, Berkeley Square, London.
