An Early Indian Islamic Calligraphic Scroll from the Shahjahan Era, Circa 1700 AD.
A rare Islamic scroll manuscript originating from early 18th-century India during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Dated 1117 AH (1702 AD), this sacred scroll contains intricately penned excerpts from the Qur’an, arranged in meticulously stylized ghubari script in black ink, with significant passages highlighted in red. The elegant calligraphy is formed into geometric patterns and ornamental compositions, displaying both devotional purpose and artistic mastery.
The scroll comprises eight connected membranes, bordered throughout with ruled gold and black margins. Several verses are framed in decorative cartouches, with a number of sections enclosed within intricate circular and star-shaped motifs.
Provenance: From the private collection of Annie Karolina, a Danish collector based in Copenhagen. The scroll was exhibited as part of a curated selection of Islamic manuscripts during an exclusive private exhibition in London, 2008.
