Bidspirit auction | British George IV C1822 Infantry
British George IV C1822 Infantry Sword. An early example of an 1822 infantry sword bearing the cipher of King George IV. George IV had a short reign from 1820-1830 which makes his cipher scarce and hard to come by. This style of British infantry sword is the first design to incorporate a gothic hilt with and a retractable guard. This example belonged to Major John Lockhart Gallie 1781-1840. 2nd Battalion. 38th Regiment. Served as a Lieutenant under the command of Lieut. Gen. Sir Arthur Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington) during the Peninsular War 1807-1814. (miniature not included) (see images of photocopies attached)
