Bidspirit auction | A Late Victorian Silver Portrait
A Late Victorian Silver Portrait Miniature Brooch of a Royal Figure - A white metal portrait miniature brooch from the Late Victorian period, featuring a circular monochrome photographic portrait of a royal lady, likely a South Asian Maharani or Begum, depicted wearing a jewelled tiara and multiple strands of pearl necklaces. Set within a lozengiform or diamond-shaped mount, the piece is constructed from stamped metal with an openwork foliate border in the Rococo fashion. The frame is surmounted by an integral crown finial at the apex, with a small shield-shaped cartouche at the base. The metal mount is affixed to a red backing, typically leather or stiffened fabric. To the lower right scrollwork, there is an impressed mark comprising the characters S. L. followed by a smaller a or d within a lozenge-shaped border, and an indeterminate mark above that appears as III. The lettering is worn and does not spell a maker's name. Brooch Dimensions: 57.86 mm (top to bottom).
