A 19th Century French Brass Two Livre Nesting Cup Weight Set - A 19th-century French nesting cup weight set, also known as a pile de Charlemagne, of solid brass construction. The set consists of a master outer casing with a heavy hinged lid and a scrolled thumbpiece, containing seven graduated nesting brass weights. The exterior of the lid is impressed with the number 2 and LIVRES, above the words POIDS and TABLE. The interior of the lid features an impressed number 1, the words LIVRE and POIS, alongside MA and TABLE. The nested cups are each stamped on their upper rims with their respective denominations in the pre-metric poids de marc system, including 8, 4, 2, 1 ONCE, 4 GROS, and 2 GROS. The casing is fitted with a heavy hinge and a functional swing latch.
