Bidspirit auction | A Vintage S J Rose

A Vintage S J Rose & Son Sterling Silver Tortoise Figurine - A sterling silver animalier miniature figurine of a tortoise, featuring a highly naturalistic and textured carapace and limbs. The piece is cast with significant detail, showing the individual scutes of the shell and the wrinkled skin of the legs and head. The silver has developed a natural darkened patina in the recessed areas of the casting, which serves to enhance the three-dimensional relief of the shell. On the right side of the tortoise's shell is a vertical row of four struck British hallmarks. These comprise the leopard's head mark for the London Assay Office, the Lion Passant mark for .925 sterling silver, a lowercase date letter 'q' in a shaped shield, and the maker's mark 'S J S' in a rectangular shield, which is the mark for the London silversmith S J Rose & Son. Tortoise Length: 3.7 cm Gross Weight: 27.16 g.
