A ROMAN MARBLE HEAD OF A BEARDED YOUNG MAN, CA. 3RD OR 4TH CENTURY AD
A marble head of possible Roman design dating around CA 3rd or 4th Century AD. The head depicts the image of a youthful man, adorning a small beard and mustache. His face features a smooth complexion devoid of any late aging, further emphasizing his youth. He was carved emoting a bright face as shown with wide eyes and raised brows as well as a subtle hint of a smile. He has short wavy hair that is held together by a simple diadem wrapped around his head. A well-crafted sculpture with attention to detail in particular with the small etchings signifying the short facial hair. Portraiture was the most popular form of sculpting in Ancient Rome. Notably was verism which is a style that focuses on hyper-realism and idealized traits.
