A TERRACOTTA OIL VESSEL, BLACK GLAZED, WITH A MEDUSA FIGURE, CA 4TH CENTURY BC.

A classic blackware guttus (or guttos) form with a rounded, ribbed body, a single loop handle, a high spout with a funnel mouth and an everted rim adorned with concentric rings, and raised, tiered spool foot, all coated with a lustrous black glaze save for the foot's reserved band and underside. The tondo is decorated in low relief with the head of Medusa.

Renderings of Medusa by the ancients were traditionally used to ward off evil. A guttos like this example would have been used by the ancients for holding oil to fill oil lamps.

Ancient Greece - CA 4th century BC.

H: 6 in., (15.5 cm.)

Condition: Very good overall. Glaze flakes throughout the piece. Chipping in places.
