A RUSSIAN SILVER AND ENAMEL MOUNTED LEATHER FOLIO
The blown leather folio with a silver plaque on the lid chased and repousse with a large standing figure of a Russian boyar on guard leaning on a support of the Kremlin wall with a decorative armorial shield. An arched and plain enamel medallion to the right of the figure painted with a view of the tower of Ivan the Great, cathedrals, and walls of Moscow Kremlin. The lower half is engraved in Cyrillic with a dedication ‘To much admired Mikhail Moiseevich Raskin in commemoration/ from colleagues of Union Bank of the city of Tientsin/ 30 November 1948’. The interior with cream color moire silk lining fitted with a pocket for documents, and the back is set on four low-faceted square feet.
Provenance: Given as a gift to Mikhail; Raskin, an owner of a chain of private banks in Tientsin ( now known as Tianjin), China from the colleagues of the bank. Acquired from the family of M. Raskin in 2012.
Moscow, 1908-1917, with master’s hallmark in Cyrillic ‘EH’ (in the scroll of the lower right corner)
Dimensions: 18 3/4 x 13 1/4 in., (47.5 x 34 cm.)
Condition: Losses to leather along all margins and spine consistent with age. Silver is lightly tarnished with remnants of cleaning silver paste around the relief decoration and light surface abrasions. Enamel plaque is slightly loose pithing the opening.
