A GILT ITALIAN ARMORIAL SWORD, NOVATI TORINO, 20TH CENTURY
With a bright, highly detailed, gilt bronze hilt, sculpted to appear as two intertwined dragons, their swirling tails acting as quillons and their wings enveloping the armorial symbol of a bear in front of a cypress tree. The guard is stamped 'NOVATI / TORINO'.
The blade is long and straight and is stamped with a 'CA' in a circle mark as well as one other partially obscured mark. The 'CA' in a circle mark was often used by the Gnutti family, prolific producers of military arms throughout the first half of the 20th century, with the important Brescia Arsenal taking their name after WW2.
Italy, first half of the 20th century.
