La Cathédrale d’Auxerre, 1907 Signed ‘G. Loiseau’ (lower left) Oil on canvas 64.8 x 54.1 cm Provenance: Anonymous sale; Christie’s London, 3 December 1996, lot 242; Acquired from the above, Private Collection, United Kingdom; Private Collection, United Kingdom
French Post-Impressionist painter remembe- red for his landscapes and Parisian streets scenes. His technique known as en treillis or cross- hatching gave his work a special signature.
Loiseau was first exhibited at the Salon des Indé- pendants in 1893, at the Salon de la Société Natio- nale in 1895 and in numerous Impressionists shows between 1890 and 1896. There, he fraternized with artists such as Paul Gauguin and Émile Bernard. His oeuvres reveal his passion for the seasons from the flourishing spring to the flamboyant fall, passing by the cold white winters and the colorful summers. He often depicted the same garden scenes as the sea- son went by, directly influenced by Claude Monet. Temporary exportation, a subject to import tax.
