A Late 19th Century French Giltwood and Gesso Trumeau Mirror with Marble Relief Panel after Francois Duquesnoy An upright rectangular French trumeau mirror in the Rococo revival style, constructed with a giltwood and gesso frame. The decorative upper portion is inset with a rectangular white marble panel carved in high relief. The composition depicts four winged putti or cherubs amidst a profusion of roses and foliate garlands. The lower left corner of the marble bears the incised signature Francois Duquesnoy and is dated Paris 1892. The reverse of the marble panel features an inset circular bronze medal with the Latin motto VIRES ACQUIRIT EUNDO and the exergue LUTET. PARISII. M.D.CC.XVII, signifying Paris, 1717. The lower section contains a rectangular mirror plate with a wide bevelled edge. The ornate frame is embellished with cross-hatched diaper work, foliate scrolls at the corners, and beaded mouldings. The reverse shows traditional construction with a fabric-covered wooden backing and metal tabs securing the marble. Height: 47 inches Width: 25 inches.
