ISBN 0708307752 This elephant folio cartographic work is the first edition of the National Atlas of Wales (Atlas Cenedlaethol Cymru), published by the University of Wales Press in 1989. Edited by Professor Harold Carter and H.M. Griffiths, the atlas was produced with the assistance of Oxford University Press for the Social Science Committee, Board of Celtic Studies, University of Wales. The work is presented in a loose-leaf format, housed within the original red textured cloth-covered clamshell binder/box. The front cover and spine feature gilt-stamped titles in both English and Welsh, with the University of Wales Press crest encircling a shield with four lions and the Roman numerals MC MXXII. The atlas comprises a comprehensive series of bilingual text sheets and high-quality colour-printed thematic maps. These maps cover a wide range of subjects including solid geology, relief and drainage, religious denominations, and detailed sociolinguistic studies of the Welsh language from 1750 to 1981. The maps were drawn by David L. Fryer and Co. in conjunction with the Department of Geography at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. This copy includes the transparent reference overlays and is secured internally by original white fabric straps. The foreword page bears the ink signature of the editor, Professor Harold Carter.
