England's Hero and Christian Soldier. Ward, Lock and Co., [c.1895]. Octavo. This octavo-sized volume is titled England's Hero and Christian Soldier: A Biographical and Historical Sketch of the Life of General C. G. Gordon. The work was published by Ward, Lock and Co. of London, New York, and Melbourne. It is bound in the publisher's original red cloth with a decorative Victorian pictorial design blocked in black and gilt on the front board and spine. The title page features a biblical quotation from St Matthew x. 39 and notes the inclusion of several illustrations: a portrait of General Gordon, a map of the Nile, and a bird's-eye view of Khartoum and its surroundings. The front free endpaper bears a contemporary handwritten gift inscription in ink: George William Gordon Howie, November 7th 1895, With Mrs Farmer's love.
