T. J. UPJOHN, LONDON. A GEORGE III FIGURED MAHOGANY REGULATOR LONGCASE CLOCK having an architectural pediment above a glazed ogee molded hood, the moulded trunk door and panelled base raised on shaped bracket feet, enclosing a 12” silver-engraved square dial with outer minute track surrounding subsidiary seconds and hour dials, fronting an 8-day weight-driven movement with five large turned pillars, jewelled pallets, dead-beat escapement, Harrison maintained power and six-spoke wheel work; with steel pendulum, brass bob and regulation nut. Illustrated and published in Derek Roberts, English Precision Pendulum Clocks, page 218, figs. 21-31A and 21- 31 B, where Roberts describes it as: ” A massive five pillar movement with jewelled pallets, a high count train and finely crossed out wheels.” He further notes that the Upjohn family were ”a well-known family of clockmakers emanating from the West Country where several of them practised as clockmakers” and dates the regulator to circa 1795. Publication in Roberts' seminal work on English precision clocks firmly establishes this regulator within the accepted canon of important English precision timepieces and provides valuable documentary provenance. A rare opportunity to acquire a published late eighteenth-century English precision regulator by one of London's distinguished makers, combining exceptional mechanical quality with inclusion in the standard reference on the subject.
