EINSTEIN ALBERT & MAJA EINSTEIN: Albert Einstein (1879-1955) German-born Theoretical Physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1921. Autograph annotation in the hand of Albert Einstein to the envelope front; & Maja Einstein (1881-1951) Maria Einstein. The only sister to Albert Einstein. Hermann Einstein and his second wife Pauline Koch, had only two children, Albert and Maria. Maja was Albert´s only friend during his childhood. They got along very well during all their lives. A fine A.L.S., `Maja´, two pages, 4to, Princeton, 15th February 1942, to Mileva Einstein in Zurich, in German. Maja states in part `Your last letter, dear Miza, contained a lot of sad things….. Concerning the post mail delivery from here to Switzerland, and in reverse, I am certainly suffering from this a lot…´, further referring to Pauli, her husband `I hadn't any news at all from Pauli for 6 weeks. That's a lot, if one is waiting for news for such a long time vainly. And he as well complains in his gradually increasing incoming letters about the absence of any news. Thereby I wrote him - and he did so to me - regularly, every week, and I had sent him a wire for Christmas, which obviously never arrived.´ Further again, and referring to herself in US, Maya states `Don't be afraid that I am Americanized. In my age one cannot fully adapt himself so easily. And really, here a lot of stuff is strange to me.´ Before concluding Maya refers to friends, news received, asks about some people and referring to them and to war, states `I gladly hope that there will be peace finally, even though not yet, and that then I will be able to see all my dears in Europe again and can live again with my Pauli in our dear house again.´ Accompanied by the original typed envelope, bearing to the upper left front corner an underlined annotation in bold black ink in the hand of Albert Einstein, stating `Text in German´, probably because of censorship during war-time. Postmarked and stamped. Very small area of paper loss to the right edge, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise about VG Mileva Einstein (1875-1948) born Mileva Maric. Serbian Physicist and Mathematician. First wife of Albert Einstein 1903-19. She was the only woman among Einstein´s students at Zurich Polytechnic. Maja married in 1910 Paul Winteler. The couple lived in Italy in the 1920´s and 1930´s, but when anti-semitic laws were approved in Italy, Maja left Europe and went to Princeton to live with her brother Albert. Paul Winteler was denied entry into the US on health grounds.
