LAVOISIER MARIE-ANNE: (1758-1836) French chemist and noblewoman, wife of the chemist Antoine Lavoisier, acting as his laboratory companion and contributing to his work. A rare A.L.S., Lavoisier, Countess of Rumford, two pages, 8vo, Paris, 2nd August 1813, to a Count, in French. Lavoisier states that she has been honoured by her correspondent's letter, and takes further honour in replying, informing him that 'Toward the end of 1811, I was to sign for five hundred francs for the year 1812. Since that time, the sum, which has become a debt for me, urgently awaits being sent by you. I will sign for the year 1813 for the sum of five hundred francs. You can send and take out these two sums with two different receipts whenever you like. The funds are there because my intention has always been to sign for the year 1813.' VG
