BULOW HANS VON: (1830-1894) German Conductor, Pianist & Composer. A very fine early and lengthy A.L.S., `Hans V.Bulow´, three pages, 4to, Utrecht, 14th Marc 1865, to Max Schwartz in Frankfurt, in German. Bulow explains to his correspondent his near future busy plan of rehearsals, concerts and travels and reports on the musical scores chosen to perform, stating in part ` I'll be in Hamburg for a rehearsal on the 23rd, impossible before then. I have promised to play in Jena on the 21st. As first piece I would like to play - you asked for Beethoven - G major Concerto op. 58 or one of the last sonatas for piano, Op. 110 in A flat major, I haven't played it yet in Hamburg - I like playing it and it's one of the most understandable. May be Schubert's op. 42 in A minor or Weber's op. 49 in D minor. The third piece would be, as already mentioned: Dance of Death, a fantasy on a motif from the thirteenth century (Dies Irae) for piano and orchestra by F. Liszt (new one)´ Von Bulow further says `I must return to Munich on April 1st because I will have the honour of conducting the orchestral rehearsals of Tristan. Now I have already made all my arrangements - every day has its destiny. I had to turn down a second commitment for Amsterdam 20th because I committed myself to the people of Jenas - although the commitment mentioned is much more beneficial than the German one… But Jena is a debt and commitment of honour´ To a post-scriptum Von Bulow adds an amusing comment regarding his writing and his frozen fingers.
