CHANDLER RAYMOND: (1888-1959) American-British novelist and screenwriter, a founder of the hard-boiled school of detective fiction. D.S., Raymond Chandler, one page, 4to, Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood, California, 10th January 1952, on the printed stationery of Columbia Broadcasting System Inc. The carbon typed document is in the form of a letter to Chandler and refers to a previous agreement made in May 1951 allowing CBS the sole and exclusive license to use the name 'Philip Marlowe' in connection with radio and television broadcasts, further stating, in part, 'It is hereby mutually agreed that said agreement shall be, and is, terminated forthwith. Accordingly, we shall have no right from and after this date to use the title and name “Philip Marlowe” and/or the character known as “Philip Marlow” unless we subsequently acquire such right pursuant to another agreement or agreements. You understand and agree that the termination of said agreement does not affect CBS' ownership of the scripts which it caused to be written based upon the property licensed…..' Signed by Chandler at the foot to indicate his acceptance of the contents and countersigned by Harry Ackerman (1912-1991) American producer who served as the CBS-TV west coast programme vice president from 1948-58. A couple of small staple holes to the upper left corner, one extremely small tear to the right edge and some very light, minor age wear, VG

Philip Marlowe, the fictional character created by Raymond Chandler, exemplified the hardboiled crime fiction genre and first appeared in The Big Sleep (1939). Marlowe was perhaps most famously portrayed on screen by actor Humphrey Bogart in the film noir The Big Sleep (1946).  A CBS radio series The Adventures of Philip Marlowe ran from 1948-51 with Gerald Mohr in the title role.
