DURRELL LAWRENCE: (1912-1990) British novelist, poet, dramatist and travel writer. T.L.S., Larry, one page, 8vo, Sommieres, n.d. (c.1969), to [Margaret McCall] ('Dear M.'). Durrell informs his mistress that he didn't write concerning Christmas due to indecision and a little problem, explaining 'You know Saph has had a sort of bug about Provence, and has steadily refused to come here for about two years now. I don't really know why or what - at 18 one is complicated - but I have let it go; we get on very well on paper and its not really a serious thing. Well now she suddenly announces her intention to come here for Xmas - which is rather surprising - she obstinately wasted the whole summer. Now what was exercising my mind was this - if she does come would it be better to give her my full and undivided attention, and provide no excuse whatsoever for jealousy, or suchlike attacks', and further adding 'It's her first quarter at York as well, and I wouldn't mind seeing how she shapes up. On the other hand the little brute might change her mind and not come. I simply don't know what to do. That's why I hesitated. I myself hate Xmas down here, and would have gone to Paris'. In concluding Durrell refers to his work, 'Tempest has fallen through - another company are doing it. My disc is being pirated too by Shirley McLane (sic) I gather - pinched the ideas in a way I can't do nothing about. Well.'. A letter of interesting personal content. VG
Margaret McCall (1925-2008) British television producer of arts programmes and wife of the script writer Philip Broadley.
Sappho Durrell (1951-1985) English writer and playwright, daughter of Lawrence Durrell and his second wife, Yvette 'Eve' Cohen. Sappho Durrell committed suicide at the age of 33 and after her death it emerged that her diaries included allusions of an incestuous relationship with her father.
