HESSE HERMANN: (1877-1962) German-born Swiss Poet, Novelist and Painter. Nobel prize in Literature, 1946. T.L.S., `Herman Hesse´, one page, oblong 4to, in purple ink, Lugano, 11th February 1926, to Henri Corbiere, in German. Hesse responds to his correspondent´s question about his life motto, and beneath the question responds `Ich versuche, soweit es mir moglich ist, meine Mitmenschen zu lieben, weil Lieben das einzige fruchtbare… Auch sich selbst zu lieben ist nicht immer leicht, Aber ich versuche es eben immer wieder´ (“I try to love my fellow men as much as I can, because loving is the only fruitful relationship we can have… Everything else, the land and the sea, the animals and the plants, are easy to love, it only becomes problematic with your neighbour. Loving yourself isn´t always easy either, but I do. Just keep on trying”).
