BEST CHARLES: (1899-1978) Canadian medical Scientist. Best known for his co-discovery of insulin. An interesting autograph text, one page, folio, n.p., 12th October 1945, to Henri Corbiere. Best responds to his correspondent´s questionnaire entitled “World Enquiry” beneath the three questions at the head of the page, '1. Were your scientific debuts easy or difficult? 2. Did means of living (another profession or a private income) enable you to make yourself known in science? or did you live solely through your work of laboratory? 3. What work (or what discovery) made yourself more famous? Which do you consider as your masterpiece?', and states `1) Hard work was required. 2) Solely through my work in the laboratory. 3) The discovery of Insulin. 4) The original publication on Insulin´ Bearing to the bottom right corner an ink stamp of “Banting and Best - Department of Medical Research - University of Toronto”.
